Maya Youssef Ensemble

Maya Youssef Ensemble

(Syria / Middle East)

  • Concert Date: Wednesday 9th March, Norwich Playhouse Theatre
  • Venue: Norwich Playhouse Theatre, St. Georges St, Norwich NR3 1AB
  • Doors Open: 6.30pm
  • Concert Running Time: 7.00pm – 9.00pm

Maya Youssef is hailed as ‘queen of the qanun,’ the 78-stringed Middle Eastern plucked zither. Maya’s intense and thoughtful music is rooted in the Arabic classical tradition but forges pathways into jazz, Western classical and flamenco styles. It explores the emotional and healing qualities of music.

For her, the act of playing music is a life- and hope-affirming act and an antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria, but across the world. Her latest release ‘Finding Home’ is a journey through memories and the essence of home both within and without. The music is deep and visceral and explores the full sonic textures of the qanun.

Maya wrote her music during a time of spiritual awakening. Over time she has come to accept the loss of her homeland and in the process of grieving (which she explored in her Album Syrian Dreams in 2018) Maya has found a much greater sense of home in the most spiritual sense.

Presented by Music Worldwide, the concert has been made possible with support from Arts Council England and is part of a wider educational outreach project, where Maya has been teaching music with young learners from St. Williams Primary School.

Ticket Prices: Band A £9.00 / Band B £7.50 / Under 16s £5.00
